Joining the Red Bull driver on the podium in Budapest are Lando Norris and Sergio Perez who finished in second and third place, respectively.
Lewis Hamilton started from pole position followed by Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, however, the lead was quickly taken by Verstappen in the first corner. With just one lap down, Oscar Piastri was following the two-time champion in second position followed by his McLaren teammate Norris.
Bad news for Alpine after Zhou Guanyu clipped the rear of Pierre Gasly’s A523 sending him colliding with Esteban Ocon. Both Alpine’s sustained so much damage that they had to retire from the race straight away. Guanyu was handed a five-second penalty for this. It was later revealed that Ocon had been taken to the medical centre to get his back checked as his seat split in two during the impact.
Just 21 laps into the race, Verstappen had built such a big lead that he would be able to have a ‘free pit’ with 22 seconds between him and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.
Adding to Guanyu’s penalty, Charles Leclerc received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
Track limits was also an issue for some drivers throughout the race with Piastri being shown the black and white flag putting him at risk of a penalty.
With just a couple of laps to go, Logan Sargeant span out in his Williams FW45 causing him to retire from the race. However, it has not been confirmed what the specific problem was.
